Program Notes

This composition is made up of four songs or movements and is dedicated to my Baba (Ukrainian for Grandmother) Mary.  I tried to use a musical language that would incorporate the traditional sound and playing style of the bandura, and blend it with a more modern classical concert music style.

The first movement “Lyrical Hymn” is a slow, almost meditative movement, which features a lyrical melody.

The second movement “A Game of Cards is a quick waltz which features a melody that takes many interesting twists and turns.

The third movement “Cherry Tree Twilight” depicts the memory I have of a cherry tree in my Grandparent’s back yard.  The music paints a portrait of this scene with a serene contemplative mood.

The final movement “Pysanka Celebration” is a set of fast variations on a theme, which represent the many beautiful and varied Pysanky (Ukrainian hand painted Easter Eggs) that Baba Mary gives as gifts for Easter to the women in my family.
